Patient Preparation

There is no preparation for this type of ultrasound. A carotid doppler scan takes approximately 30 mins.

A carotid doppler ultrasound is used to test for narrowed carotid arteries which can increase the risk of stroke. A build up of plaque consisting of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances that circulate in the bloodstream can contribute to the narrowing of your carotid aertery. If you suffer from strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) your doctor may send your for a carotid scan.

A Carotid Doppler ultrasound can also:

Evaluate blood flow through the artery after surgery to remove plaques
Evaluate the placement and effectiveness of a stent
Identify clotted blood
Detect other carotid artery abnormalities that may disrupt blood flow
