Early Pregnancy Scan
Under current government guidelines one person or partner only may accompany you for your scan.
(6 – 11 weeks)
You will need a full bladder during this scan. Please drink 2 pints of water an hour prior to your scan appointment.
This scan will take approximately 15 minutes.
Early obstetric scans may be performed between 6 and 11 weeks of pregnancy.
Keep in mind that this is 6 to 11 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period.
This obstetrical examination determines:
- The age of the pregnancy
- The number of pregnancies
- An estimated date of delivery
Other measurements will include:
- The size of the pregnancy sac
- Baby’s heart rate
- Number of babies
- An assessment of the ovaries
This examination is particularly helpful if you are unsure of your last menstrual period and will give
you an accurate assessment of the age of the pregnancy and expected date of delivery. The amount of
anatomical information that can be gained from the scan is dependent on the baby’s age. Often information
on the structure of the baby is limited at this early stage.
